3. Find the path that fits your history

Never baptized, already baptized, or unsure: these are different starting points.

If you have never been baptized

An unbaptized adult accepted into preparation is called a catechumen. This period includes learning, prayer, worship, and participation in parish life.

If you have already been baptized

A valid baptism is not repeated. A baptized Christian becoming Catholic prepares for reception into full communion. A baptized Catholic who has not received Confirmation or Eucharist follows preparation suited to those sacraments.

If you are uncertain

A baptismal certificate or details of the original church can help establish what happened. The parish investigates uncertain cases; a website cannot determine baptismal validity.

If the question is for a child

Children follow preparation appropriate to their age and circumstances. Parents or guardians should contact the parish rather than use this adult series as a complete guide.
