Following Mass: Your First Catholic Church Visit
A simple map of the main parts of a typical parish Mass.
1. Introductory Rites
The entrance, greeting, penitential act, and opening prayer gather the congregation. Details vary with the celebration.
2. Liturgy of the Word
Scripture readings, a psalm, the Gospel, and a homily form the Liturgy of the Word. Sundays and solemnities normally include the Creed and prayers for the Church and world.
3. Liturgy of the Eucharist
Bread and wine are prepared at the altar, followed by the Eucharistic Prayer. The Lord’s Prayer and sign of peace precede Communion. A prayer follows Communion.
4. Concluding Rites
A blessing and dismissal conclude Mass. Announcements may be included. A parish booklet can help with local music and responses.
