Communion: Your First Catholic Church Visit

What Catholics believe about receiving Communion, and what visitors can do.

Why this moment has particular guidance

Catholics believe Communion is Christ’s body and blood and expresses unity in the Church. Non-Catholic visitors ordinarily do not receive. Church law provides limited exceptions, which require guidance from a priest.

If you are visiting and not receiving

Visitors may remain seated during Communion. Some parishes invite non-recipients forward for a blessing; this is a local custom, so check first.

If you are Catholic but unsure

Catholics should follow the Church’s preparation for receiving, including the Eucharistic fast and confession when required. A priest can advise on individual circumstances.
